Genetic Engineering is direct human manipulation of an organism's genetic material in a way that does not occur under natural conditions. In other words it means that you can basically control how a baby can turn out. You can put what kind of hair color, eye color and can prevent your baby from having a genetic disease.
The Good!
-Gene therapy is used to treat genetic diseases at the molecular level by correcting whats wrong with the defective gene.
-Possible to make diseases not as bad
The Bad:[
-Genetically modified organisms
A)Scientist can create plants animals and microorganisms by manipulating the genes in an unnatural way
B)GMOS can spread and then breed with normal organisms and then create a hole new unnatural species
-A Scientist would be playing "god"
My personal opinion is that i think Genetic Engineering is a good idea to help treat or prevent genetic diseases that could one day kill your child but i don't think that it should be used to play "god". I don't think that we should mess with how we are suppose to look or create new organisms that are not natural. We shouldn't be able to create the "ideal" human. If you think about if we were able to then everyone would be the same. There would be nothing special or unique about an individual. Life would be BORING.
If you are a christian or not, morally we aren't ment to create a super human or animals. I think that we should let it occur the natural way, not scientifically.
I think that genetic engineering should only be used with families who have fatal diseases in their families. For example a family with a history of Tay-Sachs or an autoimmune disease. I think this should be kept away from the public everyday family and shared with families who truly need it.
ReplyDeleteI think that scientists have been genetically engineering many types of plants e.g. corn. scientists made the new corn to be more resistant to diseases and insects. I think that genetic engineering can be a good thing if it is not misused.
